McCain's only hope
The one hope than the non-Republican Republican nominee has to win the election is to base it strictly on the Iraq war. When things weren't going so well both Obama and Rodham promised a quick withdrawal from Iraq. Just the other night at the Democratic debate in California Rodham repeated her pledge to withdraw troops within 60 days of her inauguration. While that promise is certainly music to the ears of people like CodePink the vast majority of Americans don't have an appetite for losing wars. If the situation were to deteriorate in Iraq then these withdrawal pledges might be a little more attractive due to Iraq fatigue. But if the current trend of more stability and gradual reductions in forces dictated by conditions on the ground continues then both Obama and Rodham will appear to be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
As we have seen, the lack of MSM coverage of Iraq the last few months is testament that things are going much better. They simply aren't interested in reporting any good news. But even the lack of news has a positive effect on morale among the citizenry.
McCain can simply back them into a corner and ask the American people if they want all of the lives that have been lost already to go to waste with goal of stable Iraq so close.
This puts Rodham and Obama in the unenviable position of rooting for chaos and loss of American lives in Iraq. We know bin Laden is a Democrat so he'll be trying to oblige them.
